And I am never sleeping again. |
And I looked my friend Nikki in the face (on the internet) and told her, "CHALLENGE ACCEPTED."
And besides, who doesn't love a good Angry Spirit Story? I love them! It's why I grew up on The Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books, which had nightmare fuel for artwork inside! Tell me I am not the only one who loved these books...
Anyhow, here you go Nikki and my fellow fans of Angry Spirits with grudges! Hopefully this list will help you find things to scare the piss out of you and your friends.
KWEENY'S LIST OF ANGRY-MOTHERFUCKING SPIRITS
Ringu (1998)
The original is way better than the Hollywood remake, because Asians know ghost stories. They know how to make them bone-chilling and terrible, so no one get's out happy or safe. The ghosts in their stories don't tend to rest either, which is a creepy prospect all on it's own.
The Exorcist (1973)
One of the scariest possession films ever made. Even today, the movie is scary. And if you want this watch the uncut version. So many terrible and awesome scenes in it! Pee soup never freaked me out so much!
The Conjuring (2013)
This is a movie set in the 70's, and other than the horrible hair do's and the clothes, there is actually really scary shit in this one. It's a pretty good take on old haunted house tropes.
Event Horizon (1997)
Creepiest ghost ship EVER. This movie is awesome in it's horror, and with such good actors in it, how could you not want to see them go mad on a ship that is "alive"?
Session 9 (2001)
Old, abandoned asylum? Check. People fixing it up who may not be mentally stable themselves? Check. A slow-building, creepy atmospheric tale surrounding the whole thing? CHECK!
A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)
Another awesome Asian ghost story, that weaves around you like a terrible cloak of horror. The more that is revealed, the weirder shit gets. And it even made me cry at times because of the story.
Gravedancers (2007)
I will admit, this one had a weak story as far as ghost stories go, but I was freaked out more by the ghosts in it. LOOK AT THAT FACE MAN! AAAAAHHH!!!!
Thirteen Ghosts (2001)
Another one that's weak on the story, but has awesome ghosts in it! The unique ghosts and stories connected to them should have been the center of this movie, because they were the only things I cared about in the end. Watch it for the ghosts!
The Changeling (1980)
Now here is a friggen creepy story, with a bit of mystery to add to the haunted house. It's got everyone too, from seances to nocturnal grave diggings.
Carnival of Souls (1962)
A classic black and white horror with a creepy carnival in it. Because damn it, carnivals can be creepy when they are filled with ghosts.
Poltergeist (1982)
If you haven't seen this yet, you must! In this movie a house built over a native graveyard and a weird child with white hair who sees ghosts get's kidnapped! Good times for everyone!
Shutter Island (2010)
I love stories like this, were you don't know what's really going on and it just gets more bizarre as the plot thickens. Also, creepy insane asylum stuff again!
The Devil's Backbone (2001)
Guillermo del Toro knows how to do a ghost story. When a poor kid's dad dies in the Spanish war, he's sent to a creepy orphanage and makes friends with the spirits.
The Woman in Black (2012)
This was a scary, awesome movie that has one mean, angry spirit in it. I loved the setting, story and acting in it. Watch out for The Woman in Black.
Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)
Technically all Freddy Kreuger movies count, but this one is even more of a ghost story in my opinion. I love it, and I know not a lot of people did, but I think the way they layered the worlds was brilliant and really gave a new perspective on Freddy.
Great list! I can't wait to see The Conjuring, looks good!
