HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

It's finally HALLOWEEN! WOO HOOOOO! I managed to watch some movies on Devil's Night (I watched The Walking Dead, Snuff, Eddie the Sleepwalking Cannibal and Elvira: Mistress of the Dark), did some tarot readings, and I look forward to a party later tonight. :) And if I can fit it in, I am totally watching Halloween tonight.

But this is pretty much the end of my Halloween Countdown, and on Sunday The Madness ends. I'm going to end my personal madness tonight, as I have lots going on in the next few days. I have had a wonderful time blogging for you all, and I hope you enjoyed my Beetlejuice-y antics.

So until next year boils and ghouls...Have a great holiday tonight! Thanks for reading, and do come back to visit!

Day 27: THE ULTIMATE BEETLEJUICE FAN POST!

I enlisted the help of my favorite bio-exorcist fans: Emma from Little Gothic Horrors and Maynard from Maynard's Horror Movie Diary, to help create this segment for all the fans out there of the "Ghost with the Most!" We adore the movie for so many reasons, and since we've all done reviews of our own, we decided it was time to do something different. Something that showed our geek pride and gave you the readers lots of neat Beetlejuice things to explore.

Are you ready to share in the love of Beetlejuice? WELL IT'S SHOWTIME!

"5 Things You May Or May Not Know About Beetlejuice"

#1. BEETLEJUICE GOES CENSORSHIP

In 2008, German TV channel "RTL II" thought it wouldn't hurt to show Beetlejuice in the afternoon program – but only after cutting out everything that could scare the bejeesus out of the kids. The result: a botched and garbled censorship-disaster. 24 scenes missing, 3 minutes in total.

Wanna know what was cut out? Check the pics below. Yes, even the scene where Lydia writes about killing herself was cut...

#2.  BEETLEJUICE GOES HAWAIIAN

Back in 1989, Tim Burton's debut feature "Beetlejuice" was so insanely successful at the box office, the studios wanted a sequel as quick as possible. Burton wasn't that interested in doing a follow-up, but he had a few mildly funny ideas about a Beetlejuice-beach-movie, so he hired screenwriter Jonathan Gems to write a sequel, entitled "Beetlejuice goes Hawaiian".

The script got finished, Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder signed up to do the film, but only if Burton came back to the directors chair, but due to Burton's involvement in other projects and several other reasons (too many script rewrites, studios lost patience and interest), the movie gladly never came to fruition.

 #3. BEETLEJUICE GOES GERMAN

The German title of "Beetlejuice" is one of the dumbest Germanisations in history:

"LOTTERGEIST BEETLEJUICE"

God damn, what a stupid title. It's hard to explain what it means, but I'll try.
Ok, "GEIST" is easy, that's "GHOST".

"LOTTER"... well, "lottern" is a dated German word that means something like "living a dissolute life". A "Lotter" is some kind of "prowler" or "tramp".

Note: these words aren't much in use nowadays, and they also weren't exactly popular in the 80s either. So, in german-speaking countries, our Bio-Exorcist is a 'prowling ghost' which makes kinda sense, but sounds stupid, at least to people who speak German. Bleh.

#4. BEETLEJUICE GOES AUSTRIA

Somewhere in Burgenland , the least populous state of Austria, in a town called Mattersburg, there is a nice little pub called Beetlejuice. It's more of a traditional Irish pub and has nothing to do with the film, but according to an interview with the pub owners, they called it Beetlejuice because:

"...when you call his name three times in the movie, he appears and fulfills wishes. That's exactly how it works for our guests, they all get their wishes fulfilled."

Though obviously, the guests don't have to yell "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice" everytime they'd like to order a glass of beer ;-)

#5. BEETLEJUICE GOES DANCEFLOOR

I know nothing about the two German dance-music producers Volker Grabs and Ragi Swelim but I assume that they are fans of Beetlejuice because in 2002, they released a sillydance version of Harry Belafonte's "Banana Song" under the moniker 'BEETLE JUICE pres. RICK MANIAC & DR. LOOP'.

It's a really daft version of this awesome song, but at the least the music video is fun :-)

2. Tilly Devine is an Australian Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon made by McClaren Vale Winery. It was named after the notorious madam and bootlegger, Matilda "Tilly" Devine, who arrived in Sydney after the First World War. Her name became rhyming slang for wine and apparently she was said to be found either behind prison bars or cocktail bars, hence the bars on the label. Of course, they're totally Burtonesque as well, and I think Tilly would have been just Betelgeuse's kind of girl.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

And last but not least, my contribution...I thought I'd show you all the creation I put together this month. If you've been following along with my progress (or guess from the theme of my blog) then you know I wanted to do my own version of the B-man this year for my Halloween costume. Last night I went to my first party, and showed people my bio-exorcist powers as...

THE KWEENYJUICE!

IT'S SHOWTIME!

I went to a Tim Burton themed party Saturday night, and much to my surprise won the costume contest! And there was a couple dressed to the nines as Sweeney Todd and Miss Lovett too, so I had some stiff competition! (And you all know how much I adore Sweeney Todd, so I of course thought they should win!)

Don't they look fab?

And yet the abomination of Lydia and Beetlejuice's union won...
Tasty goo...
Hey, think Alice will come home with me?
I think Miss Lovett doesn't want me creeping around.
Let's turn on the juice and see what shakes loose!
What can I say, I'm the Ghost with the most babe. *winks* Like my costume? Hell, isn't this entire post not the most amazing Beetlejuice themed thing that ever lived? I think so. I thank my fellow blogging chums for joining me in celebrating one of my favorite iconic Tim Burton movies ever. We definitely love that weirdo Beetlejuice!

Day 24: Day 24: Rifftrax and Kweenyjuice Progress

Tonight I didn't get the chance to watch movies at home, but I did go to the Rifftrax experience of Night Of the Living Dead. And I am pleased to say I laughed my ass off! I love watching people riff on movies, especially ones I love. I got the chance to go with a few friends, which made the experience even better, because listening to your friends laugh like crazy people can make your laughter last longer. It's infectious like a zombie bite!

Also, did you ever notice how they used way too many cricket sounds in Night Of The Living Dead? I DIDN'T EITHER UNTIL THE RIFFTRAX FOLKS MENTIONED IT! Now I can't watch the movie without noticing that annoying detail! *facepalm*

I also did a hair and make up test for my costume. Now, I haven't spiked my hair or anything, this is only a preview. But I think my costume is coming along nicely...

What do you think? I got some nice compliments just looking like this when I went to the Rifftrax event. I didn't put on my costume, just wore a stripey shirt with my make up job and freshly dyed hair.

So overall Kweenyjuice had a good time tonight!

Day 16: Kweeny's Halloween Haul #2

Okay, so today I didn't have time to watch movies, but I did get some Halloween shopping done. It was quite the trip, and I had some friends help keep me from trying to crawl into the Halloween store and live in the walls like a cockroach. They also made sure I didn't bankrupt myself trying to buy everything.

So here is my haul of the day, most of which is stuff to help me make my Beetlejuice costume, which I have lovingly dubbed my Kweenyjuice outfit. Just pretend Beetlejuice and I got mixed in a blender and that's the creature that I am creating. Yes, it sounds like an abomination to me too. BUT IT WILL BE GLORIOUS.

Let me show you my current haul...

I got this neat magnet at the Halloween store. I love sugar skulls.
I got the green hair dye for my costume, the purple and green eye shadows to see what I can do with them, and because they were there...
I BOUGHT THESE BAD ASS DEADPOOL PINS!
I also got this neat skirt for my costume...
And this really cute shirt, which is a little bit grey, but I think it fits the Beetlejuice look.
Then I saw this AWESOME SHIRT with one of my favorite monsters on it and I had to have it.
And the back is all cut into squares!

After my epic day of shopping I relaxed with Cinnful Apple Cider I put into my new cup, and some tasty Halloween Peeps! Because I am preparing you see...

Day 02: Kweeny Reviews BEETLEJUICE

The MADNESS doesn't technically start until the 6th, but I thought I'd get myself ready with a couple of my favorite creepy movies before hand. What better way to warm up these soggy, rained-on reviewer bones than watching a movie that always gets me in the holiday spirit:

The wonderful thing about old Tim Burton films like this one was that they were creepy little snapshots into alternate worlds. Worlds where black is a primary color, ghosts are real and could hurt you badly if you weren't careful. Where the undead have their own bureaucracy in the afterlife, and stripes are the best fashion statement going. I have to admit that I love many of the old Tim Burton films, but the one that stands out for me is Beetlejuice.

A lot of amazing talent worked on this film. From the set design, the musical score (that to this day, I can't get out of my head the moment anyone sings "Day-O") the story, the actors...I could go on. I wanted to LIVE in Tim Burton's worlds every time I watched a movie he made, and Beetlejuice is no exception. Some really famous people appear in this film like Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as the Maitlands, Catherine O'Hara, Jeffery Jones and Winona Rider as the Deetz. And of course, Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice.

I honestly didn't realize how funny Michael Keaton could be until I saw this film.

Other than the wicked atmosphere of this film (and rhythmic music) one of my favorite parts is the story. We have this very normal couple the Maitlands going about their business when they are killed in a freak car accident. (The dark humor in everything always gives me a chuckle, especially the Maitlands death scene) When they come back to their house, they don't realize they are dead right away, but quickly things are more sinister than  they were previously. When they catch on, they are told by the underworld Bureaucracy that they are dead and it's their job to remove the new tenants from their house. The Deetz are the new tenants, and the Maitlands don't like their big-city ways at all. They do end up growing fond of Lydia Deetz, but her parents are another story.

So, in a moment of desperation, they find an ad for a "Bio-exorcist" named Beetlejuice. They summon him, and things get really awesome and weird from there.

If it wasn't for the fact the character of Beetlejuice is just so unique, quirky and amazingly fucked-in-the-head, I would find it hard to pick a favorite character out of the entire cast. Even Juno, the case worker of the Maitlands is a fun character. Beetlejuice really is one of those rare movies were everything works within it's own universe. You really feel like you are a part of the Maitlands journey, you grow to love the Deetz with their weird friends and ways, and you are even curious about what the system in the afterlife is like for the dead.  They even have a handbook that would make a delightful coffee table book, should you want to leave such a thing lying around for guests to read. It might not be a good idea, as the movie tends to hint at. There are other things that should be watched out for as well..."...Sandworms, you know I hate 'em!"

In the end for me it is Beetlejuice who steals the show, as he should. So if you want a film to help get you into the Halloween spirit (And you are like me and have a fondness for summoning spirits) I recommend highly this one for your Halloween Countdown. I'd also recommend the cartoon series, as it was actually pretty good and a lot of fun. It wasn't nearly as dark as the movie, but it kept the themes and atmosphere for the most part.

October Is Almost Here...

I need to do some Halloween decorating. I think it's time to do a little conjuring...wanna help me out Lydia?

Though I know I should be wary,
Still I venture someplace scary;
Ghostly haunting I turn loose ...
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!

*Looks around at her new surroundings and smirks*

This will do nicely.

(Special thanks to Frank Browning for conjuring up my new banner. )
